What structural features enable secretion in cuboidal cells?

Cuboidal epithelial cells are specialized for secretion due to their distinct structure. They are cube-shaped, providing equal surface area on all sides for efficient transport of substances. These cells often contain a large, round nucleus and abundant cytoplasm packed with organelles like the Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria. 

The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) synthesizes proteins, while the Golgi apparatus modifies and packages them for secretion. The presence of vesicles helps transport secretory materials to the cell membrane. The apical surface of these cells may have microvilli to increase surface area, enhancing secretion or absorption efficiency. In glands such as salivary glands, thyroid, and sweat glands, cuboidal cells form the lining that secretes enzymes, hormones, or sweat into ducts. 

Tight junctions between the cells prevent leakage, ensuring directional secretion. Their compact structure and organelle-rich cytoplasm make them ideal for producing and releasing various biochemical substances quickly and efficiently, supporting vital body functions such as hormone release and fluid balance.
