Detailed Solution

Commercial crops were given more importance under colonial rule in India. In the 1600s, more than one-sixth of India's landmass was under cultivation. The acreage under agriculture rose by roughly half due to population growth, which also increased the demand for food. Peasants continued to expand the areas under cultivation, clear forests, and cultivate additional fields. The British government promoted the cultivation of industrial crops like cotton, sugar, and jute. In nineteenth-century Europe, when food grains were needed to sustain the expanding urban population as well as raw materials for industrial manufacturing, these crops were in higher demand. Peasants added more land, and forest lands were reclaimed for growing commercial crops.
