When nonmetals combine with oxygen, acidic oxides are formed.
The process of addition of oxygen is called oxidation. In this process, electrons are lost. Nonmetals are electron gainers, thus, when they combine with oxygen, acidic oxides are formed.
When non-metals get oxidised, they form acidic oxides. For example, Sulphur is a non-metal and when it reacts with oxygen in air it forms SO2. SO2 is acidic oxide. Likewise, carbon reacts with oxygen or gets oxidised to form acidic oxide called carbon-dioxide (CO2).
S+ O2SO2
