El Dorado was called the legendary "City of Gold". El Dorado had a fairy tale where many precious stones and gold coins were found. According to the Europeans, El Dorado was an unprecedented gold city. The thirst for riches led to the exploration of South America by many Portuguese and Spanish explorers over the next two centuries. Among the earliest legends is that of the terminally ill Juan Martinez a Spanish captain who claimed to have visited the city of El Dorado. There was also an explorer named Raleigh who tried several times to reach the city of gold. He hoped he had a chance to find the city of El Dorado. El Dorado's real name was Manoa. The name El Dorado eventually came to be used figuratively in any place where wealth could not be quickly acquired.
