The traditional Muharram parade in Trinidad was transformed into a riotous carnival known as 'Hosay'. Hosay, also known as 'Tadjah', is a West Indian street event in which multi-coloured model mausoleums are paraded before being ritually delivered to the sea or any other water. The multi-coloured mausoleums have been compared to "mosques" by some contemporary writers. The event was known as Taziya or Tadjah in British Guiana, now Guyana, because of the floats, which were the festival's most conspicuous and ornamental feature. Hosay was termed the "Coolie Carnival" in nineteenth-century Trinidad newspapers and government reports. It was one of the ways indentured labourers helped to preserve the culture.
