Jati were the sub-castes. The period between the years of 700 and 1750 CE witnessed the rapid clearing of forests and the extension of agriculture. Because of the changes that were brought out during the period, the society became more differentiated and people started to form into groups called jatis, which were called sub-castes. With the increase in occupation and influence, some of the sub-castes were ranked based on their backgrounds. The control of the resources of the people within the groups was done by the members of jati itself. Each jaati had its own rules and regulations and the rank was not the same everywhere. The rules were then enforced by the Assembly of elders.
