The religious upheaval that occurred in the Western church during the 16th century was known as the Protestant Reformation. It was a theological, political, philosophical, and cultural upheaval to reform the Catholic Church. It shattered Catholic Europe in the 16th century, establishing the institutions and ideologies that would come to characterise the region in the modern age.
