Tommie Smith and Johan Carlos received their medals in the Mexico Olympics while wearing black socks and no shoes to reflect black poverty. With this action, they attempted to call international attention to racial inequality in the United States. Peter Norman, the silver medallist, backed this up by wearing a human rights logo on his shirt.
