The purpose of the Cabinet Mission was to hold talks about the handover of authority from the British Government to the Indian Government. In other words, the Cabinet wished to award India's Independence while maintaining its national unity. When the cabinet delegation arrived in India, they discovered that the Muslim League and the Congress were both adamantly opposed to reaching an agreement. Congress favored a strong central government with minimal provincial authority. On the other hand, the Muslim league favoured stern political protections for Muslims. Since there was a demand that all sides could agree with, the Cabinet came up with its own set of recommendations.
