Detailed Solution

The British strategy in Bengal regarding the local rulers was to control and not eliminate them. The British East India Company had known the strength of the Mughal army in its first tussle, and they also found out about the enmity between neighbouring states. They started to use it to their advantage. But at the same time, they knew that being a foreign power would be difficult and dangerous to eliminate the local rulers. Therefore, using hostility against each other and offering help, the British started to intrude into the political system of India. In other words, they started using the principle of "Divide and Rule." The local rulers came under the control of the British East India Company.
