Detailed Solution

Pataliputra was the capital of the Gupta dynasty. The Magadha ruler Ajatashatru initially constructed Pataliputra as a tiny fort close to the Ganges river around 490 BCE. It was a city in ancient India. At the meeting of the Son and Ganges rivers, Udayin laid the foundation for the city of Pataliputra. The Guptas increased their dominance over the neighbouring kingdoms through military conquest or matrimonial partnerships. Around 330, Chandra Gupta installed his son Samudra Gupta as king. The new king erected Pataliputra as the Gupta capital, and the empire expanded from this administrative hub. It had grown to include several lesser kingdoms to the east by about 380.
