Detailed Solution

Between 1783 and 1789, the production of indigo in the world fell by half. Indigo plants are native to the tropics, and Indian indigo was once used to dye fabric in Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. However, only a limited amount of Indian indigo made it to the European market, selling for high prices. As a result, European fabric manufacturers were forced to rely on woad, a plant that produces violet and blue colours. Woad dye was pale and drab, but indigo dye made a deep blue hue.
