The United States of America's cotton supply drastically decreased when the Civil War broke out, which caused the focus to change from trade to war. India became the British's new priority. As a result, the American Civil War severely impacted American cotton exports while also providing India with a tremendous opportunity to increase its cotton exports. However, when the American Civil War was over, and the United States was once again able to supply Europe with cotton, Indian exports suffered.
