Great explorer Marco Polo spent many years exploring China before making his way back to Italy in 1295. This understanding of woodblock printing was carried around by Marco Polo. However, luxury editions, intended for aristocratic circles and wealthy monastic libraries, were still penned on extremely expensive vellum. Animal skin was used to create the parchment known as vellum. These institutions mocked printed books as being low-class symbols. In the university towns, retailers and students purchased the less expensive printed versions.
