Detailed Solution

The general name for all cotton textiles exported from India to England was Calico. In search of spices, the Portuguese came to India. When the Portuguese came to India for the first time, they landed in Calicut, located on the Kerala coast. They decided to take cotton textiles and spices from India to Europe, which is how the demand for Indian textiles gained momentum in western countries. These cotton textiles exported by the Portuguese to European countries came to be known as calico, derived from the word Calicut. After that, all sorts of cotton textiles were called calico by the Europeans.
