The Revolt of 1857, also known as the First War of Independence, was a major uprising against British rule. Although it was unsuccessful, it had far-reaching effects on Indian society and administration.

1. End of the East India Company’s Rule

• After the revolt, the British government realized that the East India Company had failed to control India.

• In 1858, the rule of the East India Company ended, and India came directly under the control of the British Crown through the Government of India Act.

2. Changes in Administration

• The office of the Secretary of State for India was created in England to supervise Indian affairs more closely.

• A Viceroy was appointed in India (replacing the Governor-General) to represent the British Crown.

• The Indian Army was reorganized to reduce the chances of another revolt. More British soldiers were recruited, and Indian soldiers were kept under strict control.

3. Policy of Divide and Rule

• The British became suspicious of Indians after the revolt.

• They tried to divide Hindus and Muslims by encouraging separate identities, which later created communal tensions.
