Manchester industrialists began selling their clothes in India by affixing labels to the bundles of cloth. Buyers felt more confident about purchasing the cloth when they saw labels like ‘MADE IN MANCHESTER’ in bold letters on them. Furthermore, images of Indian gods, goddesses, and important personalities were used on these labels by the manufacturers. These images aided in making foreign products more familiar to Indians. Calendars were used by British manufacturers to popularise their products in the late nineteenth century. Calendars, unlike newspapers and magazines, were used by illiterate people.
