Detailed Solution

The literal meaning of Sans-Culottes is “those without knee-breeches”. They were members of the Jacobin club and belonged to the poorer section of society. By their clothing, they wanted to show their lower-class status. Jacobins included small shopkeepers, artisans such as shoemakers, pastry cooks, watchmakers, servants, printers and daily wage workers. Many Jacobians had gathered and decided to start wearing long striped trousers similar to the dock workers. They were dressed this way to set themselves apart from the fashionable section of society who wore knee-breeches.
