Detailed Solution

Agriculture was the main source of income for the early kingdoms in India.
The Indus Valley Civilisation was primarily an urban society. The Vedic culture, mainly village or rural-based, came after it. Thus, towns did not start to reappear until the age of the mahajanapadas. There were numerous opportunities to expand urban cultures throughout the Mauryan Empire. Cities began to expand starting from 400 BC due to increased trade, increased craft production, and intensified agriculture. Historians refer to this period as the age of second urbanisation. Contrary to the Harappans, the Aryans lived in rural areas.
