Detailed Solution

Kovalan was Merchant's name in the Silappadikaram story.
The name Silappathikaram or Silappatikaram refers to the first Tamil epic. This 5,730-line poem nearly entirely uses the kaval (aciriyam) meter. The tragic love tale of Kannaki and Kovalan, a regular married couple, is told in the epic. The Silappatikaram is set in a prosperous seaside city during the early Chola era. Kannaki and Kovalan are a newlywed couple in love and enjoying married life. Kovalan finally runs into Matava, a courtesan (Madhavi). He grows fond of her, departs from Kannaki, and moves to Matava. He lavishly gives her money. Kannaki waits as the chaste woman despite her anguish over her husband's adultery. A singing competition is organized during the rain god Indra festival.
