Detailed Solution

The tithe was the name of the tax levied by the Church in France. Before the French Revolution broke out in 1789, the Third Estate had to pay a variety of taxes, and one of them was the tithe. The tithe was a compulsory tax imposed by the Roman Catholic Church, comprising one-tenth of peasants' agricultural production. Taxes such as this became one of the major grievances of the Third Estate because their estate was the only one to be taxed; the First and Second Estates, comprising clergy and nobility, respectively, were exempted even though they were the most affluent ones. Tithes were abolished by a decree of the National Assembly passed on 4th August 1789.
