Detailed Solution

There were 562 princely states in India when it became free and independent in the year 1947.
When the British government withdrew from the country, there existed more than five hundred princely states in India and all of these were officially recognised in the Indian subcontinent. In addition to this, there were thousands of zamindari estates and jagirs. More than 40 percent of the land area in pre-independent India belonged to the princely states and moreover, about 23 percent of the population lived in the princely states under the direct rule of kings and nawabs. Not to forget, these kings and nawabs were very powerful and influential.
