Johannes Gutenberg was a Goldsmith. Inventor and goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg was living in exile due to political unrest in Mainz, Germany, when he began testing printing in Strasbourg, France, in 1440. A few years later, when he returned to Mainz, the Gutenberg press was an entirely operational and ready-to-use printing apparatus by 1450. To develop Gutenberg's printing press, a variety of discoveries and inventions had to be combined. The printing press, which also had a matrix where the individually cast letters and symbols could be joined to generate the necessary text, was built on the conventional screw press, which was a precursor of the contemporary drill press.
