E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker was also called Periyar. He came from a middle-class South Indian family and led a life of self-discipline. He studied Sanskrit scriptures very carefully. He started the Self-Respect Movement. He said that untouchables were the real upholders of Tamil and Dravidian culture. He also started the Dravida Kazhagam movement and was popularly known as the father of the Dravidian movement. He protested against caste discrimination and also raised his voice against the Brahmin domination in Indian society. The movement for caste reformation continued later in the 20th century.
