1918-1921 was the period of the civil war in Russia. The rise of anti-Bolshevik sentiment led to the start of the Russian Civil War. Monarchists, militarists, and, for a brief time, foreign countries were among the opposition parties. They were collectively referred to as the Whites and the Bolsheviks as the Reds. The Red Army successfully defended the newly established Bolshevik government under Vladimir Lenin against several Russian and interventionist anti-Bolshevik troops. The Bolsheviks secured a total victory by the start of 1921.
