The Great Depression started in 1929 and continued until the mid-1930s. Most parts of the world saw catastrophic decreases in productivity, employment, income, and trade during this period. The actual date and severity of the downturn differed in each country. However, agricultural districts and populations were disproportionately affected. This was because the drop in farm prices was bigger and more sustained than the drop in industrial goods prices. Several causes contributed to the downturn. Overproduction in agriculture remained an issue. Falling farm prices exacerbated the situation. Many countries financed their investments with US loans in the mid-1920s.
