Kannauj was the political epicentre of North India during the reign of Harshvardhan. Harshavardhana was born in 590 AD, the son of King Prabhakaravardhana of Sthaneshwar, which is now Thanesar, Haryana. During Harsha's reign, Hiuen Tsang travelled to India. Hiuen Tsang praised the king's generosity as well as his justice. Harsha was an avid supporter of the arts. He was also a talented writer. He wrote in Sanskrit, including Ratnavali, Nagananda, and Priyadarshika. The feudatories were under Harsha's command. Harsha's reign marked the beginning of feudalism in India. He was regarded as a great patron.
