France was an absolute monarchy during the French Revolution. France had a system of absolute monarchy where the king was upheld as the divine authority. The king favoured the first two Estates. The first two Estates, which included the nobles and clergy, were the most favoured social groups. They weren't responsible for paying state taxes. Peasants and workers, who made up the Third Estate, made up the majority of the population. In addition to paying enormous taxes, they lacked social and political rights.
