Detailed Solution

During British rule in India, peasants faced various problems, such as heavy taxation, the burden of debt, and no concession in case of crop failure.
Even if they had a low crop production in a particular year, the peasants were required to pay the revenue. They had to sell their produce at a loss to pay the taxes. Neither the British nor the zamindars attempted to improve the state of agriculture. The farmers had no other option than to turn to moneylenders who charged exorbitant interest rates for loans because they could not pay their debts.
