The process by which the colonial state forced people, especially the people belonging to rural areas, to join the army was known as forced recruitment.
It was used by the British government in India during the First World War to increase the number of soldiers fighting on its side. Defence expenditure increased due to the altered economic and political conditions brought about by the war. Price increases during the war made life extremely difficult for the common masses. Villagers were asked to provide soldiers, and the forced recruiting sparked intense resentment.
