The proportion of the representatives was 300, 300, 600 respectively of the first, second and third estates in the resplendent hall of Versailles.
The First and Second Estates each sent 300 representatives, who sat in rows on two sides facing each other, while the Third Estate's 600 members had to stand in the back of the hall of Versailles. Only the members of the third estate who were rich, influential and educated were allowed to enter and vote. The meeting was closed to peasants, artisans, and women.
