The civil disobedience movement underwent a new turn in September 1932 when Gandhi, who was detained at Yeravda Jail, embarked on a fast in opposition to the separation of the so-called "untouchables" in the electoral system envisioned for the new Indian constitution. Unkind opponents referred to the fast as political extortion and a form of compulsion. Gandhi was aware that his fast had a moral impact, but that impact was not focused at those who agreed with him; rather, it was directed at those who supported and believed in him. The war would be more than half won if his self-crucifixion could convince his detractors that he was sincere, even though he did not anticipate their responses to be similar to those of his friends and coworkers.
