Detailed Solution

The religion of most of the Sinhalese-speaking people in Sri Lanka is Buddhism.
There are two major social groups in Sri Lanka - Sinhalas and Tamils. Sinhala is the first language of the Sinhalese, who make up 74 per cent of Sri Lanka's population. The Tamils account for approximately 18 per cent of Sri Lanka's population. The majority of Sinhala speakers are Buddhists, whereas the majority of Tamils are Hindus or Muslims. Christians constitute roughly 7% of the country. They belong to either Tamil or Sinhala communities. In 1948, the democratically elected government implemented a series of majoritarian policies to establish Sinhala dominance by according special status to Buddhism by declaring it the national religion, among many other such programmes. It alienated the Tamil minority and quickly devolved into a civil war, forcing thousands of people to flee the country.
