More than ten lakh women were elected to rural and urban local government bodies as a result of the reservation of women at the local level of government. The 73rd and 74th Amendments of India mandated that one-third of those elected to local governmental bodies be women. It implemented quota-based political reservations for women in rural regions in 1993 with the goal of promoting gender equality in human development by making rural service delivery and local governance inclusive and responsive to women's demands. One-third of seats in local government bodies—in panchayats and municipalities—are now reserved for women. Women's reservations in local bodies have aided in increasing women's participation. Because of the reservation system, there are more than 10 lakh elected representatives in rural and urban local governments.
