Detailed Solution

The Massacre at Chios was the second major oil painting of Eugene Delacroix.
Eugene Delacroix was fascinated by the Massacres at Chios, a 19th-century fight for freedom by the Greeks against the Turks. Greeks from neighbouring islands had come to Chios, encouraging the Choices, the island's native people, to join their rebellion. In response, Ottoman armies invaded the island and massacred thousands of people. The onslaught was so severe that it left the island in ruins and killed most of its inhabitants. Delacroix was drawn to the dramatic and documenting real-life occurrences and portrayed a romanticized painting of the slaughter's aftermath. The painting is over four meters tall and shows some of the atrocities of the Chios massacre.
