Indentured labourers were engaged in India under contracts that guaranteed them a trip home once they had completed five years of service on their employer's plantation. The majority of Indian indentured labourers originated in what are now eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Tamil Nadu. The Caribbean islands, Mauritius, and Fiji, were the top destinations for Indian indentured immigration. Indenture in the nineteenth century has been compared to a new form of slavery.
