William Jones was appointed as a junior judge.
Sir William Jones was a jurist and a linguist. He was appointed as a junior judge in the Supreme Court of Calcutta, which the Company established. He was deeply interested in ancient civilisations. He learned Sanskrit and began reading ancient texts on philosophy, religion, law, politics, etc. Jones believed that rediscovering ancient texts could be beneficial to the British to gain knowledge about the laws and traditions of the natives.
