Farmers were forced to grow Indigo to supply raw materials to the cotton textile industry in Britain. Indigo was mainly used to dye the fabrics. Globalisation is not an entirely new phenomenon. It was present throughout colonisation. Cotton belts in India attracted the British during the British Empire, and cotton was eventually supplied to Britain as a raw ingredient for their textile industry. Because of the availability of high-quality cotton from India, the cotton textile industry in Manchester and Liverpool thrived. The Champaran movement arose because farmers in that region were compelled to produce indigo on their property to supply the textile factories in Britain. They couldn't cultivate enough food to feed their families. Farmers in India have faced additional problems due to globalisation, notably after 1990.
