Detailed Solution

The areas called which were irrigated by the canals made by the imperial powers were called canal colonies.
The British government built a web of irrigation canals to convert semi-desert wastelands into productive agricultural land that could grow wheat and cotton in western Punjab. These were produced for exports. Peasants settled in these canal colonies from other parts of Punjab. As a result, there was an expansion in the cultivation of cotton, which was exported to Britain. This increased the production of textiles in Britain.
