Manuscripts written by hand in a variety of vernacular languages have a very long and rich history in India. On either homemade paper or palm leaves, manuscripts were copied. Pages occasionally contained beautiful artwork. Many years after the development of print, in the late nineteenth century, manuscripts were still being produced. Manuscripts were, nevertheless, highly costly and delicate. They required careful handling, and the script was challenging to understand because it was written in a number of different genres. Consequently, there was little usage of texts in day-to-day living. Despite the extensive network of local elementary schools that pre-colonial Bengal had developed, many of the students did not read books. They picked up writing abilities instead.
