Large-scale industries and an international market were some of the features of the proto-industrialisation period.
Proto-industrialisation was an early period of industrialisation when factories were not in existence in Europe. There was extensive industrial output for a global market before factories appeared all over England and Europe. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, urban European merchants started relocating to the countryside, where they paid farmers and craftspeople to make goods for a global market. Thus, this proto-industrial system functioned as a hub for trade. It was run by merchants, and instead of factories, a sizable proportion of producers worked on their family farms to create the items.
