Detailed Solution

Increasing taxes, forced recruitment, and influenza epidemics were some of the hardships faced by Indians during the First World War.
The war resulted in an enormous rise in defense spending, which was paid by rising taxes, including higher customs fees and the introduction of an income tax. Prices rose throughout the war years, doubling between 1913 and 1918. Soldiers were needed from villages, and the forced recruitment of people in rural regions sparked intense resentment. Afterwards, crops failed in several areas of India in 1918–19 and 1920–21, leading to severe food shortages. There was also an influenza pandemic at the same time. Census data from 1921 indicates that famines and the plague claimed the lives of 12 to 13 million people.
