Detailed Solution

The large landowners of Prussia were known as junkers. The combined forces of the monarchy and military suppressed the initiative of unification of Germany in the 19th century, which was backed by these junkers. Prussia assumed command of the national unification process from then on. Otto von Bismarck, the country's chief minister, was the architect of the process. It was carried out with the support of the Prussian army and bureaucracy. Over the course of seven years, Prussia won three wars with Austria, Denmark and France, completing the unification process. Hence, after a prolonged struggle, in a ceremony conducted in Versailles in January 1871, Prussian King William I was proclaimed German Emperor.
