Detailed Solution

We have to find the median marks, if the marks of 15 students are 25, 19, 17, 24, 23, 29, 31, 40, 19, 20, 22, 26, 17, 35 and 21.
We know that when n is odd, then the median is given by,
n+1 2 th term
Rearranging the given data in ascending order,
17, 17, 19, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 31, 35 and 40.
We can see that the number of terms is 15.
Using the median formula,
n+1 2 th term= 15+1 2 th term = 8 th term Here, the 8th term is 23 and thus, the median is 23.
Therefore, option 3 is correct.
