We have to find the value of

a 2 + b 2

.
Squaring both sides of

a + b = 7

using,

a + b 2 = a 2 + b 2 + 2 a b

a + b 2 = 72 ⇒ a 2 + b 2 + 2 a b = 49 ⇒ a 2 + b 2 + 212 = 49 ⇒ a 2 + b 2 = 25

So, the value of

is 25.
