A sound created in a big hall will be reflected from the walls repeatedly until it is reduced to the point where it is no longer audible. Reverberation is the repeated reflection that creates sound to persist.
It is now known that the sensation of sound will last approximately 0.1 seconds in our brains. If the reverberation time is too long, the reflection will arrive after 0.1 seconds. If the minimum time interval between the original and reflected sounds is 0.1 s, we will hear a distinct echo.
