Air generally contains N2,O2 and H2O. When this 1l(1000ml) of air is burnt with CaC2 gives CaCN2. And when this air burnt with a mixture of anhydrous CaCl2, the water is absorbed here. In 1000ml of air, the presence of noble gases is 1%.

So, 1% of 1000ml=1100×1000=10ml

So, the volume of air present is 10ml. Hence, the reduction in the volume of air is =1000ml- 10ml=990ml.
