When a ray of light enters a prism, it bends towards the normal; as it leaves the prism, it bends away from the normal. In a glass prism, when a ray of white light enters, it bends towards the normal as it goes from a rarer medium (air) to a denser medium (glass) and splits into its seven constituent colours. When these different colours of light rays leave from the other side of the prism, it bends away from the normal as it goes from a denser medium (glass) to a rarer medium (air).
