When a ray of light travels from a rarer medium to a denser medium obliquely, it bends towards the normal.
Refraction of light is the bending of the ray of light when it passes from one medium to another medium. As light travels from the air (rarer medium) to water (denser medium), it bends towards the normal. When light travels from denser to rarer medium, it bends away from the normal. It can be verified by Snell's law.
