When a vibrating object due to which sound produces moves backwards, it creates a region of low pressure called rarefaction.
A region of high pressure is called a compression zone when an object that vibrates pushes and compresses the air in front of it as it goes forward. At the same time, the region of low pressure is called rarefaction.
